ICON Transportation Driver Named PacLease and TRALA Driver of the Year

Remington, IN - With nearly 50 years of accident-free truck driving experience, Orville "Pat" Rule, Jr. of Avon, IN just "keeps on truckin'." In a surprise presentation at a ribbon-cutting luncheon for ICON Transportation, PACCAR Leasing Company announced Pat Rule as the PacLease Driver of the Year for 2005.

ICON Transportation has been a long-term partner of PACCAR Leasing Company (PacLease) and local PacLease franchise Palmer Leasing Group. "Pat Rule's outstanding driving record and achievement sets him apart from his peers and puts him in a class few drivers will claim in their entire career," stated Frank Walter with Palmer Leasing Group.

With almost 50 years of total accident-free driving and over 3.74 million miles of accident-free driving during 35 years over the road, the 65-year-old Rule has blazed quite an impressive trail. When asked what he attributes most to his success, Rule answered, "I attribute all of my success to the family support I receive from home, especially my wife Ellen, who takes care of everything while I am on the road. Having this peace of mind cuts down on worrying and allows me to devote more attention to driving."

In addition to receiving the PacLease award, the Truck Rental and Leasing Association (TRALA) named Rule the 2005 Driver of the Year during its recent annual meeting. Rule also received the Indiana Motor Truck Association Master Truck Driver Award. Also this year, Rule's colleagues at ICON Transportation honored him by celebrating "Pat Rule Day". He was presented with numerous awards including a 1.5 million Milestone plaque, and the company established the Pat & Ellen Rule Scholarship to be awarded annually to a spouse or child of an ICON employee. When asked for advice to young drivers, Rule said, "Always keep your windows and mirrors clean, sit up high in your cab for better posture and visibility, and adhere to the speed limits."

PacLease provides annual safety awards for ICON drivers, assists with training programs and participates in driver meetings. ICON Transportation Director of Fleet, Tim Onstott said, "We use PacLease's 25-point safety qualification test for hiring drivers. We are an ISO-certified company and the safety test is an ISO process at our company. At ICON, Rule is the standard by which all drivers are measured."

Onstott said Rule has undergone a personality profile to assess how he performs under pressure and his decision-making. "We applied his profile to drivers to see how close we could come to finding more drivers like Pat," Onstott said. "Safe drivers are the backbone of our trucking company and we're doing everything, short of cloning Pat to use as a model driver, to hire and train quality and safe drivers."

In 1957, Rule began driving at the age of 17 in rural Wisconsin hauling agricultural and construction freight before taking his first over-the-road job in 1971 with Schneider. After 15 years and 1.7 million miles at Schneider, Rule joined Viking Freight Systems and logged another 500,000 miles in 4 years. His career with ICON began in 1990, and with 1.5 million miles, he has tallied 3,745,000 career accident free miles.

Rule and his wife Ellen, residents of Avon, IN, have been married 24 years with 5 children and 11 grandchildren.
